Like all other undefinable icons, Cher is known by only one name. She is the Queen of Music, having an illustrious career since the 1960s. She regularly changes her image to keep up with the times whether it is hosting a variety show in the 70s or becoming metal in the eighties. She has also had a brief stop in techno as the early 2000s came in. Known as a gay icon and one of the greatest performers of our time there is no other female artist that can hold a candle to her or for that matter probably ever will.
Most recently seen in the film ‘Burlesque’ where she sang in the role, she has established herself as both an amazing singer and actress. Not one to slow down as she gets older she produced a documentary as a love letter to her mother titled ‘Dear Mom, Love Cher’. As an active participant in gay rights, she supported her daughter Chastity as she defined herself as FTM transgendered and transitioned to becoming Chaz. She is also the mother of Elijah whose father is Greg Allman, Chaz’s dad is Sonny Bono. In 2012, she stated that a musical is to be made of her life. She has released an unbelievable 25 studio albums.
Born Cherilyn Sarkisian in California in 1946, she first came to the public’s attention as one half of Sonny and Cher with her then husband Sonny Bono. They had a popular variety show and a mega hit in ‘I Got You Babe’. After she split with her husband she continued to achieve solo success. It was not until the 1980s that her acting career took off. With amazing performances in Silkwood, Mask and Moonstruck (winning an Oscar for the latter) she became an established actress. It was also during this time she released the mega hit ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’.
Since the 1980s she have worked non-stop and been rewarded greatly for it. She is the only artist to have a Number one Billboard hit each decade for the past six decades. She has won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, three Golden Globes and a Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. She sold over 40 million albums as a member of Sonny and Cher and 100 million albums as a solo artist. She is known as an avid campaigner for women’s rights.
