Known as one of the greatest artists of all time, Elton John has been successful on the charts since the late 60s. Starting out his career in elaborate costumes, he has since toned down his look and now relies on his immense talent and extensive back catalogue. Best known for hits such as ‘Tiny Dancer’ and ‘Bennie and the Jets’, he is a legend of the industry and is one of the few artists from that time that continues to be successful. He has sold over 300 million albums worldwide and is said to be worth even more than that.
As an active campaigner for the fight against AIDS he established the Elton John AIDS foundation in the 1990’s, he has raised millions of dollars for this charity. He is an openly gay musician who has been currently married to his husband David Furnish since 2005. He is an advocate for LGBT rights and same sex marriage. He performed at the Queens Jubilee Concert in 2012 and collaborated with the Queens of the Stone Age on their sixth studio album. His most recent album The Diving Board reached number 4 on the Billboard Charts.
Born Reginald Dwight in Middlesex, England in 1947, his career first started with his debut album Empty Sky in 1969. It wasn’t until the mega hit Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in 1973 when glam rock took off. This album has such recognisable singles as the title track, ‘Candle in the Wind’ and ‘Saturday’s Alright for Fighting’. Further albums including Caribou, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and Too Low for Zero helped to cement him as the influential artist he is known as today. Continuing to chart in the 80s and 90s, John wrote the album for the 1995 hit movie The Lion King and performed a devastating rendition of ‘Candle in the Wind’ at Princess Diana’s funeral.
His has one many accolade including six Grammys, five BRITS, one Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Tony and Kennedy Centre honours. He was given a ‘Commander of the order of the British Empire’ in 1996 and a Knighthood from the Queen for services to music in 1998. Throughout his career he has received mixed reviews for his albums especially in the later years. He has performed 26 career sold out shows for Madison Square Garden. He has been named a ‘Disney Legend’ for his work and services to Disney films.
Elton John is currently touring the United States and Europe on his new album The Diving Board as well as playing all his hits. The tour kicks off in Philadelphia on November 27 and will end in Paris, France on November 19. The tour will go all the way from the US, to Canada, Europe, the UK and then back to other parts of Europe. He will also be playing Madison Square Garden again on December 3rd and 4th. He will be accompanied by his band but his piano and vocals will take centre stage.
