Lady Antebellum first burst onto the scene with their mega hit ‘Need You Know’ which helped them crossover from a prominent country band into the mainstream. Since the hit of the single and their album of the same name they have gone from strength to strength. The trio which includes Dave Haywood, Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley has become the biggest country band of recent years. The group is best known for winning five Grammys at the 53rd annual awards show. Having won many accolades from their second studio album Need You Now there seems to be no sign of stopping for the three country crooners.
The reigning most popular country band in the US has just released a third studio album Golden. It became number one on country airplay. They also recently sung backing vocals on Darius Rucker’s single ‘Wagon Wheel’. There first Christmas album was released in 2012 and was titled On this Winters’ Night. Lady Antebellum was first formed in 2006. Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley were old school friends and after moving to Nashville, Tennessee they met Hillary Scott, whose singing they had heard on MySpace. The name for the band comes from the old war term ‘antebellum’ which means ‘before the war’. The group discovered the name whilst photographing old antebellum homes. Performing in small clubs around Nashville the group was eventually signed to Capitol Records in 2007. After their success it was revealed by Scott that she had previously auditioned for American Idol twice and never even made it past the first round.
As, a relatively new band it was a shock when they took home five Grammys at the awards ceremony. These included ‘Song of the Year’ and the prestigious ‘Record of the Year’ for the single ‘Need You Now’. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2008, it had a good reception on the country charts with three singles released and they toured with country powerhouse Martina McBride. Their second album Need You Know was what caused them to become popular in the mainstream. The lead single only debut at fifty on the country charts but was number two on the Billboard 100.
Lady Antebellum is now taking their most recent album Golden on a national tour. Launching on the 10th of January in Illinois the tour will wind its way across the country eventually finishing in Delaware. The forty-three city tour will hit almost every state and includes cities such as Fargo, North Dakota and Charlotte, North Carolina. The tour is expected to be a massive hit as the band will perform all songs from their recent album as well as old favourites. They are definitely cementing themselves as country’s most popular new band.
