Miguel

Miguel Jontel Pimentel is an American singer, songwriter, and producer who performs under the stage name Miguel. At the young age of 13, he began writing and recording songs with his uncle’s four-track recorder. A few years later, he was introduced to a member of Drop Squad, a music production company, where he learned his way around the studio before eventually pursuing a recording contract. He began his career in 2007 when he was signed by Jive Records and released his first album entitled All I Want Is You in November of 2010. Unfortunately, his first album was not very popular when it came out, but its fan-base grew slowly and steadily. In 2011, he switched labels to RCA Records and released Kaleidoscope Dream, his second album, in 2012.

Miguel identifies himself as a member of a new wave of R&B music, including such artists as The Weeknd and Frank Ocean. Citing influences by Prince, Freddie Mercury, Phil Collins, and Kanye West. He integrates styles and techniques from funk, rock, hip hop, R&B, and electronic music and describes his work as “Nostalgic in a sense that it’s familiar… it’s shocking, edgy, energizing.” His voice is often compared to the voices of Babyface and Prince.

In his early career, he was signed by an independent record label called Black Ice in 2004. His album, entitled Young & Free, was scheduled for release in November of 2006, but was never released. When his video for his single Getcha Hands Up came out, he decided to change his image as well as his sound and left his label. Less than a year later, he was signed to RCA Records and spent the next three years contributing to songs for artists like Asher Roth and Usher. In 2010 he released his album All I Want Is You with Jive Records, which debuted at number 109 on the Billboard 200 chart. It eventually climbed its way to number 37 and quadrupled its initial sales. He then returned to RCA Records and released Kaleidoscope Dream in 2012, selling 71,000 copies in the first week alone.

Since 2011, he has been nominated for 26 awards, including Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Song, and Song of the Year. In 2012, he won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Male Artist. Also in 2012, he collaborated on a song called Lotus Flower Bomb, which won a BET Award for Best Collaboration. In 2013, he won another BET Award for Best Male R&B Artist. He also won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for his track Adorn in 2013.

Currently, he performs as an opener for Drake’s Would You Like A Tour, which shows in both Canada and the United States. He performs alongside other artists like Future, PartyNextDoor, and The Weeknd. The tour began on October 18, 2013 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and will visit such cities as Vancouver and Calgary, in addition to United States cities like Washington, Minneapolis, and Chicago, ending the tour on December 18 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
