One Direction is an English-Irish boy band based in London, England. After finishing third in the British television singing competition The X Factor in 2010, the group was sign by Simon Cowell’s music label Syco Records. The group has broken several records and topped the charts of most major music markets worldwide. Having sold a total of 19 million singles and 10 million albums, these boys are without a doubt some of the most popular in the world. After their first year of fame, the powerhouse boy band represented a 50 million dollar business empire.
During their stint on the seventh season on the British competition show The X Factor, the five boys auditioned as solo candidates. After a suggestion by the show’s producer, they were put into the show’s Groups category. After coming in third, they were signed by Simon Cowell and debuted their first album in 2011, Up All Night. In November of that year, they signed with an American label, Columbia Records. When their single What Makes You Beautiful was released in the United States, it became the most successful debut for a British group since 1998. They began their first tour as an opener for Big Time Rush and their album quickly topped the charts in sixteen different countries. They were the first British group in history to debut at number one on the United States Billboard 200 chart.
After the release of their second album Take Me Home, the album’s lead Single Live While We’re Young reaches the top ten in virtually every country it charted in. It also recorded the highest one-week opening sales figure for a song by a non-U.S. artist in the United States. In the United Kingdom, the album and its second single, titled Little Things, debuted at number one at the same time. This made the group the youngest group in British history to achieve this benchmark. The single topped charts in more than thirty four other countries.
One Direction has been nominated for one hundred and fifty eight awards and has won ninety three of them. The band has won two American Music Awards, five BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards, two BRIT Awards, five Ben Board Music Awards, seven MTC Europe Music Awards, nine Teen Choice Awards, four 4Music Video Honours, three Telehit Awards, a four MTV Video Music Awards, among others. They also hold three Guinness World Records: one for their first albu, going straight to number 1 in the U.S., the first British group to achieve this in the United States, and the second for being the most followed pop band on Twitter, and the third for having the highest debut for a U.K. group on the U.S. singles chart.
The band has recently announced that in 2014, they will embark on the North American leg of their world tour in Canada and the Unites States. The first tour date is on August 1, 2014, in Toronto before heading to the United States to perform in such cities as Boston, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis and Atlanta.
