Though her roots are set in gospel and country music, Katy Perry has become one of the hottest American pop musicians in the industry. Raised in Santa Barbara, California by two parents, both pastors. Katy began pursuing her music career after getting her GED from high school. While singing in church, rock veterans from Nashville heard her sound and suggested that she come with them there to polish her writing skills. In Nashville, Katy started recording demos and was taught how to crafts songs and play guitar. Performing as Katy Hudson (her birth name) she released her gospel album in 2001 but it was unsuccessful due to the end of her label’s operations. She changed her surname to Perry and at 17 she left home to work in Los Angeles with Glen Ballard on an album for the record label Island. However, Perry eventually ended up signing to Columbia Records in 2004. There she worked with a record production team called The Matrix as their female vocalist. Katy also began to record her own album, which was never finished. She was dropped from the Columbia label, but the company’s publicity executive recommended Perry to Virgin Records chairman Jason Flom. Flom, convinced that Katy was the next breakthrough star, his extended discussions with fellow Virgin executives resulted in Perry’s singing to the newly created Capitol Music Group. She made her debut album One of the Boys in 2008, which featured her first hit single “I Kissed a Girl” as well as another number one on the Billboards “Hot n Cold”. Katy released a second album in 2010, Teenage Dream, which includes singles “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, and “Firework”.
