New York Red Bulls Soccer
The New York Red Bulls are a soccer team that currently is headquartered in the city of Harrison, New Jersey. They represent the area of New York City. The team plays within Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. The team is one of ten within the Major League Soccer that is a charter club. They have competed within MLS since the beginning of the league. Originally, the team was called New York/New Jersey MetroStars up until the year, 1997. Starting in 1998, they were known as MetroStars. In March of 2006, the team was acquired by Red Bull GmbH and the name was changed. The team is the only MLS franchise that does not have a specific trophy. This is notable fact given the fact that the team has been active since 1995. The team however has had significant seasons such as the one in 2008 when they were able to get to the MLS Cup final. The team reached semifinals in the years, 1997, 1998 as well as 2000 in US Open Cup. They would get to their first final in the year, 2003. They did not end up winning, however, losing to Chicago Fire (1-0). In August of 2000, Clint Mathis, a player for the team set a record. He would score five goals in the game against Dallas Burn.
In the early years of the team, the original owners were John Kluge and Stuart Subotnick. The first player that was signed to New York Red Bulls soccer team was Tab Ramos. He became the very first MetroStar. He was subsequently joined in the year 1994 by Tony Meola and Roberto Donadoni. They would all compete in 1994's FIFA World Cup. In the year, 1996, the team garnered much publicity when they chose Juninho as well as Tulio in 1996's MLS Supplemental Draft. A report later debunked that publicity.
The identity of Juninho was eventually discovered, but the identity of Tulio to theis date remains a mystery. It has often been said to have become a part of the folklore of MetroStars. By the late 1990s, the team had bottomed out having a record of 7 to 25 under coach Bora Miluinovic. It was recorded as the worst in the history of MLS. The team would acquire Lothar Matthaus, from Germany in the year 2000. They hoped that Matthaus could spark their floundering record in the game of soccer. The MetroStars were noted as the first MLS team to receive a trophy outside North America. It was during 2004 at La Manga Cup. They defeated Dynamo Kyiv (3-2) of Ukraine in the semifinal of the game. They would edge out Norway's Viking FK in the final match of the cup.
Red Bull purchased MetroStars in the year 2006 and they became a new team. Everything was changed to adapt to New York Red Bulls soccer. The logo, the colors, as well as the franchise were changed. In the year 2006, the team would garner a win at Giants Stadium against Bayern Munich of Germany (4-2). They would however lose to FC Barcelona that same year (4-1). August of 2007 saw the emergence of David Beckham. Beckham draw many devotees to Giants Stadium. It was an all time record for a league match that was not considered a double header. By the 2010 season, the team had a new coach as well as a new stadium. The team's new head coach was Hans Backe. Many of the prior coaches' signings were removed from the team's season in the year 2009 as a result of the hiring of Backe. Many of the players such as Jorge Rojas as well as Carlos Johnson and Walter Garcia were not picked up for the year 2010 season. Backe's approach was slanted more towards acquiring players from Europe rather than Central and South America.
While Backe was the coach for the team, they remained undefeated. In July of 2010, Thierry Henry would sign with New York Red Bulls soccer team. He was noted as a designated player. When he arrived in the city, he broadcasted that he was retiring from international football. In August of 2010, the team signed Rafael Marquez. With the signing of Marquez, this established the team as the very first one to have three players who were designated. The new addition would improve the team's standing in the sport of soccer and they were able to achieve first place in Eastern Coference game that year. They did however; fall to San Jose Earthquakes in the semi-finals. The team opened their season in the year, 2011, with a 1 to 0 victory when they faced Seattle Sounders. This happened as a result of the draws with Columbus Crew and Houston Dynamo.
The achieved their second win that season when they faced San Jose Earthquakes. The newest signee to the team, Luke Rodgers, was able to contribute two goals that game. New York Red Bulls soccer team would play in Emirates Cup of 2011. This took place on July 30-31 in London, England. They were able to win when they played Paris Saint Germain (1-0). The next day of the tournament, they were able to win 1-1 against Arsenal FC. The team is stated to be the first of MLS teams to play and third to win in Emirates Cup, following Arsenal FC and Hamburger SV. The team garnered trophies in MLS Western Conference in 2008 as well as won the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic in 2010.
The team plays games at home in Red Bull Arena. This arena opened during the 2010 season. Before that they played at Giants Stadium. They played at that stadium from 1996 to 2009. Giants Stadium was located initially in the city of East Rutherford, New Jersey. In November of 2007, Red Bull stated that it purchased complete ownership of a building of a new stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. The corporation would build the stadium without the use of taxpayer funding. This propelled the team to move from Giants Stadium to Red Bull Arena.
The arena is located across the Passaic River. It can seat 25, 189 people. The team played an exhibition game with Santos FC in March of 2010. The soccer team, at present, trains in the facilities of Montclair State University. The team has an assortment of supporters and they have grown since its inception in the year, 1995. The team receives significant support from fans. As of 2012, there were about 18, 281 people in attendance during the entire regular season and 14, 035 in the playoff games. The main rival of the team is DC United. They compete with that team in the Atlantic Cup competition. Other rivals include New England Revolution as well as Philadelphia Union. The team has not been able to defeat New England Revolution in Gillette Stadium for approximately 12 years. This has as a consequence, intensified the existing rivalry between the two teams.
When the team was first created they wore black or white jerseys that were solid in color. They would transition to jerseys that had black and red stripes in a vertical direction. When Red Bull purchased the team, they began wearing jerseys that were white in color and had red trim. Each jersey also has a Red Bull logo on it. When the team first began, their matches have been shown by MSG and MSG Plus. They were simulcast on 98.7 ESPN. Many of the matches also are shown on ESPN2 as well as NBC Sports Network. Commentary is done in Spanish by ESPn Deportes Nueva York 1050. Announcers Nelson Rubio and Robert Sierra indicate a play by play on the Spanish station, while as of the year 2012, Steve Cangialosi and Shep Messing analyze the game as it is shown on television.
